Interactive technology has become a vital asset in modern classrooms, facilitating active learning, collaboration, and engagement. By leveraging the power of technology in the classroom educators can truly transform the learning experience for their students.

As we look to the future, these tools can be used to enhance education in ways we never dreamed possible. However, we must keep in mind the powerful role that educator voice plays and the imperativeness of providing equal access to technology regardless of socioeconomics.

I recently participated in three roundtable discussions with Dee Lanier, Micah Shippee and Monica Burns at Samsung offices in New Jersey. We discussed tech in the classroom: the current and future state of education,  how the connected classroom enhances the teacher and student experience and the impact of interactive displays in education. 

The discussions we had were powerful and there we some fantastic takeaways from them.

10 ways to make the most of technology in the classroom

1. Embrace professional development 4:21

Decision makers need to invest in training and resources to help educators effectively integrate technology into their teaching practices. Current technology trends in classrooms focus on intentional decision-making for effective usage. Educators are considering factors like cost-effectiveness, cross-platform compatibility, and collaborative features to ensure inclusive access for all students. Professional development services are vital for empowering teachers to leverage technology effectively.

2. Promote equitable access 11:28

As technology adoption varies across schools due to financial inequities, it's essential to prioritize equity and inclusion. Schools must be intentional in selecting quality technology use cases that align with existing teaching practices. Providing students access to technology in the context of great teaching and learning fosters agency and resilience. We must ensure all students have access to technology, regardless of their socioeconomic background.

As emerging technology introduces new ways for students to express themselves creatively, educators need to adapt assessment strategies. Shifting from traditional grading of end products to valuing the learning process becomes essential. Collaborative rubrics, reflections, and discussions can empower students to take ownership of their learning.

Teachers can step aside and guide students through creative processes, supporting their reflections and self-evaluations.
